The original shearling flying jacket was designed and manufactured by Leslie Irvin. In 1926 Irvin set up his 'Irvin' flying jacket manufacturing company in the United Kingdom, and became the largest supplier of flying jackets to the Royal Air Force during World War II. The demand was huge during the early years of the war and demand was so great that Irvin engaged subcontractors to meet supply needs, causing slight variations of design and colour that can be seen in early production Irvin flying jackets.

The altitudes at which aircraft operated increased with heavy bombing raids in Europe during World War II, taking place from altitudes of at least 25,000 feet and above, where temperatures could reach as cold as -50°C.

The cabins of these aircraft were uninsulated, so a warm, thick flight jacket was an essential piece of survival equipment for every member of the crew. The flying jackets are extravagant in their use the sheepskin making the Irvin shearling jacket one of the most iconic flight jackets that there has ever been.  Tally Ho!
